Zaynab (Colonna Sonora Originale)

A 4 track soundtracks ep (15m 44s) — released November 11th 2022 on Four Flies

"Zaynab" is the new podcast of Italian magazine Internazionale. Written and narrated by Stefano Liberti with creative direction by Jonathan Zenti, it is about the female footballers from a women's football team in Herat, Afghanistan, and their coach.

The original music composed for the soundtrack by Tommaso Colliva and Raffaele Scogna tells the story of a journey, using synths, electric guitars and percussion to describe the emotions that accompany it, and evoking images of distant lands in today's hyper-connected world.

"When it comes to journalistic documentaries like Zaynab, it's not easy to tell through music events that took place in far-off lands where we've never set foot, events belonging to contexts that we've never even remotely experienced", explain Colliva and Scogna. "We've tried to do so without falling into stereotypes and clichés, to accompany a story that seems taken from a modern version of a Salgari novel, but is in fact a distilled representation of today's reality."

"We started from the story to re-create musically the emotions that the narrator conveys, to transport the listener to that distant world and allow them to understand what the protagonists of the story go through when they find themselves facing borderline situations."

The music reflects all this. Nodding to Vangelis, Dune and "Lone Survivor", it brings together organic and synthetic elements that fuse with each other into a "non-place" that is also very real.
